A comprehensive dental examination will fully assess how healthy your teeth and gums are, check for any dental health problems you may be experiencing and help you prevent any from appearing in the future. You will need a dental examination before any new treatment beings.
A word from Dr Smita Mehra, Principal Dentist
At the Neem Tree, we love to talk and even more than that, listen. We feel that this enables us to understand our patients better than anyone. Our dentists are trained to help anxious or nervous patients and do everything we can to make sure you feel safe and care-for.
Part of the dental examination involves an open and honest discussion about your dental health, hygiene and how we can help you look after your teeth for today, tomorrow and the future.

We understand that coming to the dentist can be a nervous experience for many patients. We wholeheartedly welcome nervous patients and especially patients who have avoided visiting a dentist for a long time. We offer a range of anaesthetics and numbing techniques to ensure that any visit you have to the Neem Tree is comfortable, relaxing and pain-free.
We are also open in the evenings and on weekends, because we understand how difficult it can be to visit the dentist during office hours!

Dental Examination FAQs
What happens during a dental examination?
We strive to provide more than just a dental check up for our patients. We perform a holistic, comprehensive examination of the teeth, oral cavity, and soft tissues of the face, head and neck.
Are check-ups important?
Booking regular checkups is very important for your dental health. Regular checkups ensure that your dentist can help find potential oral health issues before they even begin, or become a bigger problem. Early detection gives you the best chance of getting the right treatment as soon as possible while avoiding any complications.
We like to highlight that prevention is much better than cure, regular checkups help early detection, prevent any issues from arising and reduce the number of patients that require medical treatment or surgery.
Take charge of your oral health today and schedule an appointment with the Neem Tree today! We offer a wide variety of services for exceptional treatment and care for you and our family.
How often should I visit the dentist?
Most dentists recommend having a cleaning and check-up every 6 months. Depending on your specific oral health needs, twice a year should suffice, unless your dentist recommends that you need to visit more often than that, especially if you have ongoing oral health problems.
Even if you keep up with your oral hygiene routine and take care of your teeth, visiting the dentist is still very important because your dentist can spot issues that you cannot yourself.
Will they take x-rays?
The dentist may need to take digital x-rays but, they will only do this with your permission. They will do this to check in between the teeth for any hidden decay. They may also take a few photographs of your teeth with an intra-oral (in-mouth) camera.
You will then be asked to look at the screen in front of you and will be talked through your x-rays and photographs.
You may be asked some questions and be asked for your opinion. This is the opportunity for your dentist to give you a thorough breakdown of what is going on in your mouth and for you to ask any questions or queries you may have.
I’m embarrassed about seeing a dentist – what can I do?
It’s normal to be stressed or a bit embarrassed to see the dentist but our dentists are trained to make sure that all our patients are comfortable with coming to the dentist. Unfortunately, there are many people who refuse to go to the dentist and avoid their regular checkups due to their anxiety or fear of the dentist. However, avoiding checkups, cleanings and regular routine care because you’re too embarrassed could leave you worse off.
When it comes to the condition and health of your teeth, the dentist is a completely judgement free zone! Your dentist will never judge you, their job is to ensure the optimal health of your mouth and that’s what all our dentists strive to achieve. No matter how you were when you first walked through the door.
Our only aim is to ensure that you have the best oral health possible!
Can I be sedated for my dental exam?
You can be sedated during treatment. If you are especially worried or nervous your dentist can give you a sedative to help you relax. The sedative will ideally make you less anxious and a lot calmer. This is not usually done for a simple dental examination.
How long does a dental exam take?
The average amount of time it takes for a dentist to perform a dental examination on a patient is around 45 minutes. Depending on the overall health of your mouth and teeth, your examination may take a little longer. If the patient has many dental issues, then it will take more time to address the issues during your examination.
Can I see a dentist on the weekend?
Our Neem Tree practices are open 7 days a week. If you cannot find time to book an appointment on a weekday, we are open on weekends for you to book an appointment especially for any day of the week that you may have a dental emergency. It is important to note that our hours differ on the weekend.
Do you check for oral cancer?
Yes. Dentists can detect early signs of oral cancer during your examination. Many oral cancers can be found early during screenings and exams by dentists or dental hygienists sometimes even during a self exam.
