Clear braces work in the same way as traditional metal braces; brackets are attached to the teeth to hold a wire in place which gradually pulls the teeth into alignment. Braces can now be made from clear, plastic materials to make them harder to spot.

“The Neem Tree is an amazing dental practice. I have been going there for a few years now and have been having treatment to straighten my teeth, as well as a tooth replacement and the results are amazing.”

It is common for patients of all ages to feel slightly self-conscious or even apprehensive at the idea of wearing traditional metal braces. Luckily, there are now several alternative options out there for patients to receive orthodontic treatment discreetly.

One of these options are clear braces. Clear braces are designed to work in the same way as traditional braces. However, clear braces are crafted using clear plastic instead of metal. This makes them far more subtle and far harder to notice than the metal track braces.

Clear Braces FAQs

What are clear braces?

Clear braces are the cosmetic alternative to metal braces. Instead of silver metal brackets and wires, these braces are made from clear plastic materials such as ceramic or porcelain in order to make the braces less noticeable.

How are the braces fitted?

Clear braces are fitted on to the teeth the exact same way as the classic silver metal braces are fitted. The brackets are positioned on your teeth and a special adhesive will hold them in place throughout the entire duration of your treatment. The archwires are then placed in between the brackets to hold it in place slowly applying pressure to your teeth to move into the desired alignment.

What are the alternatives to Clear braces?

Advantages of Clear braces.
  • One of the most steady and strongest options for correcting teeth
  • Effective at treating extreme overcrowding than other forms of teeth straightening treatments
  • Visually appealing
Disadvantages of Clear braces.
  • Can be hard to brush and floss correctly
  • There are quite a few follow up appointments throughout your treatment
How long do they take?

Each individual’s treatment will take a different amount of time. It depends on how misaligned your teeth were before you began your treatment. Usually treatment takes between 12-18 months. If your teeth do not need a lot of help then treatment time could take a lot less time however, if you have severe overcrowding or any other issues, your treatment time could take longer. The average length of time for the process to be completed is 24 months but it can take from 1 year to 3 years.

Will I be sedated?

No, you will not be sedated. The process of applying your braces or even getting them tightened is a fairly painless procedure. You will not need to be sedated for it.

How many appointments do I need?

The number of appointments required will vary greatly from patient to patient and is heavily dependent on a number of factors.

Does it hurt to have clear braces fitted?

The process of having braces fitted may feel a little strange but it is not a painful process. It is possible that your mouth may feel quite sore and tender for a few days after your first appointment and your tightening appointments. Over the counter painkillers can be used to help with this. Your teeth will get used to the adjustment after a couple days so the pain or sore feeling shouldn’t last long.

Will I need a retainer after my treatment?

Yes, you will need a retainer after your treatment. Your orthodontist will determine how long you will need to wear them for and the duration during the day or night you should keep them in. Remember, retainers are a way to ensure that all your hard work throughout your teeth straightening treatment remains and ensures that your teeth do not move position as they constantly do.

Why choose clear braces for your teeth?

Wearing clear braces means that teeth can be aligned without obvious signs of braces being present. Clear braces are an option for adults who want help with straightening their teeth. At the Neem Tree, we realise that many adult patients feel self-conscious about wearing traditional braces. Clear braces can be the solution. They can also be used for straightening the teeth of children and teenagers in some circumstances.

Speak to the team at the Neem Tree and we will discuss your clear braces requirements with you. We will talk to you about how clear braces straighten your teeth and help you decide whether they are the best choice for you.
